People at the Gym

There’s this guy at the gym, that wears a toque inside and gym shoes that encapsulate every toe like gloves, and a muscle tea with tattooed arms, and back brace, and sings aloud to his walkman.  He’s balding on the crown of his head, you can see, when he takes his toque off.  He gets a call on his phone and sits on the weight bench and starts shouting at the person on the end of the line, ‘No! I just didn’t have time!’  Another guy, stands blocking doorways and puts his water bottle on benches, so you have to ask him to move his water bottle or himself out of the doorway and hoots and shouts when he’s lifting, ‘C’MON’.  A woman, tattoo sleeves and back tattoos, and wears a tank top, of course, wouldn’t want to miss them, and frosted short hair walking across the floor in lunges.  Water bottle guy, sometimes gives her advice.  The salt and pepper haired guy, sweat down his spine. tanned with the instructor getting him to do lunges on a bench with dumbbells in each hand, bench presses more than I can.  These older dads like cast iron pans.  The huge fat guy, bald, glasses, goatee, looks like The One Who Eats, with the instructor benching twice what I can, fat around him like the michelin man’s big brother dressed in black.  There almost every morning.  He’ll drop a lot of pounds if he keeps it up.  His will be an amazing transformation.  Brunette in the corner working on her abs, doing the plank. Her deltoid carved out of her shoulder like a computer mouse.   White haired hunchback old lady, hobbit sized, pumping away at the exercise bike, every morning.  Says ‘Hi Emily’,  to the instructor filling a water bottle, when she walks by.

calling all Kingston Developers

In an effort to make this blog more focused, I'm going to concentrate on Web App development and occasionally throw in the odd rant or two.
Started a Meetup called Kingston Developers hoping to make friends with other developers in Kingston and make cool things together.
I think the first thing we want to do, for easily distracted people like me, is to identify our goals.  And then focus on them.
My goal is to have a working prototype of an app by April 1st.
I have a few app ideas, some of which I've been working with my ex on.
So I need to evaluate those ideas.
I've been working through this Thinkster.io tutorial on building web apps using Angular.js and Firebase.
I hope to finish the tutorial by this weekend and evaluate my app ideas on Monday.
I will try to chronicle my journey along the way.

NaNoWriMo 2012 Completed

Looking forward to next year!  I got a plan...
They said you could edit your certificate in Adobe Reader but it wouldn't open for me.

Retrain the Brain

Went for a good long run this morning.  Cleared the head.  Set myself up to study all day.  And I did!
Thinking about ones reward circuit and how I've maybe trained myself to fail.  And that I need to retrain my brain.  That is I've trained myself to accept that big rewards are not worth the work by giving up and moving onto something easier.  And that maybe that creates a vicious cycle where my brain strongly objects when I try to climb the ramp to get the cheese.  Well no more!  I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!  I'm breaking the cycle.

1 more week to go

till I'm done classes for the fall semester.  I'm looking forward to not having anything due.  The constant stick at my back is tiring.  But it'll be worth it when it's over.
Had a good talk today with the system administrator at school.  It's nice how much you can get out of a simple chat with someone.

Maps - yeah yeah yeah

Long day.  Slept about 2 hours last night.  Finally got presentation one finished.  One down, one to go.  Learned a lot about maps, but just the tip of the iceberg.  Realized why there is an entire department dedicated to geography.  Also, if we're going to make a geo-data based app we might want a geographer on hand, at least as a consultant.  So, that means two tests, one presentation, one assignment and one long paper to go for next week. Then it's exams.  But tonight it's date night and I'm going to chill before hitting the hay early.  42,000 words today!

Know your errors

One of the reasons given for keeping a blog is to explain one's errors.
What's my major malfunction currently?
Deployment.  Deployment. Deployment.
I'm looking at delegating the task or learning it myself.
Parse seems a good choice but I don't like handing over control to a third party.
The alternative is MS or OpenSource, or RubyOnRails.
I like OpenSource but not PHP.
My solution is to talk to our server guy at school and get advice.
Cause I'm running in circles trying to figure it out on my own.
