Forever Money

I was honestly thinking of writing something sincere today, and that was just to say that I'm a sucka for sci-fi and that I liked the book The Forever War by Joe Halderman, but before I could do that Blogger told me that now I can get a commission if someone buys something by going through my blog first, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Spoiler alert!
Anyways, the reason I liked the book was that Joe was a Vietnam vet and has an education in Physics, so he delivers a real authentic feel for the bureaucracy of war and the physics of his education shows through in the physics of his imaginary world making things seem more plausible (as opposed to say Armaggedon) but the neatest feature is how he uses 'time travel' - for the first time in a book I've read we see get to see the consequences of the relativistic effects of the speed of light travel, which is made possible in this book by sort of by slingshotting your spaceship with Collapsars, and that's just to say that when these soldiers get back to Earth from fighting a battle light years away, it may be 200-400 years later earth time and the technology, political atmosphere have changed and then there's the question of whether on not the war's still going on.  Also, what it means for comrades in war is that anyone separated by a few minutes during light speed travel may means years apart in age should they ever meet again.  Also, one has to think about how to get a body up to and down from near speed of light without tearing it to pieces.
Apparently, Ridley Scott inspired by the success of Avatar is getting back into sci-fi with this book.  So, I suggest giving it a read whether or not you buy it through amazon from here.
It also won the Hugo and Nebula awards, so other people liked it too.
Amazon Associates doesn't seem to be working so I guess I'll just have to promote this book without any hope for financial gain.
